PPC Search Engines (or Pay Per Click) are a very common way to get
interested people to your website. Generally, the person trying to advertise
their site on a PPC Search Engine will "bid" a certain amount for a given
keyword. Depending on where their bid is, their website will be shown in an
ad when someone enters the search term they bid on. For example, if you
were selling computers, you could bid on computer terms such as RAM or
PC system, and if you bid enough, people who enter those terms then see
your ad. Then, if the user clicks on your ad, you a charged your bid price for
that click - that's why it's called Pay Per Click - if noone clicks on your ad, you
aren't charged even if a bunch of people saw the ad!
This is usually considered a good way to get targeted web traffic, as only
people who are interested in your ad are normally going to click on it. This
is different for example from paying for say 1,000 users to see your page, as

"Camry" and "Toyota", because you don't want to exclude people who were only thinking
of Camrys and weren't considering Honda Accords. You want a chance to change their
mind.
Tip - Consider sending visitors to specific "landing" pages.
For example, if you had an electronics store and someone found you by searching
"Ipod", but you just send them to your main page, they might give up. At least try some
tests where you send the visitors directory to the Ipod page and see how that works.
